NATURAL LENS PHOTOGRAPHY

Welcome

Thank you for visiting my website, Natural Lens Photography. You may be wondering what I mean by "Natural" Lens? Today, the word" natural" has so many different connotations that I feel compelled to clarify what "natural" means from my perspective as a photographer. In this context, "natural" means anything of the physical world, specifically, my observation and interpretation of the physical world.

The inclusion of humans AND our creations as part of nature differentiates my view of "natural" from the more commonly held definition. The physical world, of course, includes plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth, but it also includes humans and human creations. The images of majestic Alaskan landscapes shown on my landing page are clear examples of "natural" in the typical sense. However, the iconic Flatiron skyscraper shown on this page, with the elegant wedge design and exquisite detail, is also an example of human's natural creativity and ingenuity. I believe that buildings, for instance, are inherent for people as hives are for bees. I feel that efforts to elevate ourselves from nature are persistent remnants of archaic and misguided dogma.

I consider myself a visual artist to make the distinction between physically seeing and conceptual photography. As a visual artist, I fully immerse myself in the experience of observing a memorable scene unfold in real-time. I live for the moment when my image captures an essential quality of the subject or setting, and the viewer has an emotional connection similar to the emotion that I felt when I pressed the shutter.

On the other hand, a conceptual photographer typically has a preconceived idea or message that she wants to convey through photographic imagery. The final image created to represent that idea is often something that did not exist in the physical world before the artist set up the scene or meticulously crafted the image using photo editing software. As a result, conceptual photographs are often captivating, stunning, emotive, and aesthetically pleasing. My preference at this time, however, is to curate a collection of individual images that hopefully clearly express my ideas. My SOCIAL - POLITICAL COMMENTARY collections are examples of this approach.

Finally, I think that my interest in a broad range of subjects appeals to many viewers. However, as a result, it isn't easy to place the photographs on my site into a specific genre. I've made an effort to organize the website to create a sense of cohesion that embraces the varied subject matter and styles.

That said, I hope you see something on the site that you find visually appealing, thought-provoking, or prompts you to see things differently than you would have otherwise.

Enjoy!
